WHAT YOU WISH FOR
Dir. Nicholas Tomnay | USA | 2023 | 101 mins
Ryan (Nick Stahl) is in hot water. With mounting debts from a gambling addiction, he flees to Latin America to seek sanctuary with his friend Jack (Brian Groh), who resides in a luxury villa. Jack and Ryan are former culinary school roommates, and Jack’s financial success is evident. A jealous Ryan is keen to learn more about Jack’s career as a private chef, and how it has afforded him such an affluent lifestyle. But Jack seems withdrawn; he quietly deflects Ryan’s enquiries, remaining tight-lipped around the specifics of his job. However, Ryan isn’t in the dark for long – after a series of shocking events, he assumes Jack’s identity, and quickly learns the horrific truth about what his former classmate has really been up to in the kitchen. Faced with a decision that will alter the course of his life forever, Ryan must find a way out of the situation he’s now stuck in – or it’s out of the frying pan, and into the fire.
With some absurdly morbid subject matter and a slick, rampantly entertaining plot, director Nicholas Tomnay serves up a deliciously twisty thriller which is sure to keep you guessing. The film examines a staggeringly unjust and exploitative wealth divide compounded by moral bankruptcy, and the parts of ourselves that become lost when we fixate on the grass being greener. Alongside some excruciating moments of tension and gut-wrenching gore, WHAT YOU WISH FOR is a cautionary tale of the dangers of aspirational living, rampant consumerism, and class envy.
