THE ORIGIN
Dir. Andrew Cumming | United Kingdom | 2022 | 99 mins
45,000 years ago, a stone-age tribe embarks upon a perilous expedition to a new land to establish their settlement and stake their claim to a new life. When they discover that the land is barren and is also home to a vicious, possibly mystical, threat, a rift begins to form within the group, as tribal elder Odal believes that they are being stalked by a demon that has possessed the landscape and can only be sated with a blood sacrifice. The clan’s leader Adem, however, is convinced that the enemy is made of flesh and bone and can therefore be destroyed, which thrusts them into a savage and relentless battle with the mysterious presence. As they face untold hardships and with the brutal environment bearing down upon them, the tribe must battle hunger, the elements and the unseen threat that lurks within the bleak and foreboding mists in order to survive.
Superstitions and primal fears that have haunted humanity throughout history are unearthed and laid bare in The Origin. As we follow our protagonists on their treacherous journey towards a new homeland, we are immersed in their peril as they face an unseen foe that they neither understand nor have the capability to match. Alongside stunning cinematography and sound design, the characters’ spoken language of Tola (a fictional tongue developed specifically for the production by linguist Dr Daniel Andersson) brings a striking level of authenticity to this highly original palaeolithic horror tale.
