Dir. Lukas Rinker | Germany | 2022 | 90 mins
Ah, the perennial porta-loo; a longstanding source of blessed relief and stomach-churning torment, often experienced simultaneously. Who among us hasn’t swung open the door on a hot day at a music festival, winced ever so slightly, then hastily gone about their business while the ever-present smell and sense of claustrophobia combine to create one horrifying intrusive thought: what if I got stuck in here? Fortunately for most of us, that’s pretty unlikely. However, for architect Frank, this is about to become a grim reality. He’s been so busy working on a major new development, he’s failed to notice an impending disaster- the developer he’s teamed up with on the project is an evil maniac who will stop at nothing suit his own nefarious ends. When Frank wakes up inside a porta-loo with a bloody head and impaled arm, the gravity of his situation soon dawns on him, and he must race against the clock to escape.
Joining the ranks of the very best ‘trapped-in-a-bad-place’ movies, Lukas Rinker’s Holy Shit! skilfully runs the gauntlet of surreal craziness, tension, gross-out black humour and body horror, all delivered within the confines of one single location and played out in nail-biting real-time format. You might want to time your snacks carefully though, as this gory and over-the-top black comedy has no shortage of gags to make you… well, gag.
