WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING

Director: Sean King O’Grady | USA | 2021 | 97 mins | UK Premiere

As a freak tornado approaches, Melissa and her family take shelter in the bathroom of the family home to wait it out. As the storm rages outside, Melissa bickers with her younger brother Bobby while her parents attempt to keep the situation calm, all the time barely keeping their own petty recriminations at bay. When the storm appears to have passed, the family discover a bigger problem: the bathroom door is blocked from the other side and they can’t get out. As time passes, there appears to be no sign of rescue and Melissa begins to realise that she and her girlfriend Amy may be responsible for the horrors they are now facing.

Based on Max Booth III’s 2020 novella, this single-location horror thriller is a masterclass in slow-burn terror and proof that being trapped in an enclosed space with your family might just be the greatest horror imaginable. As the threat of a tornado and its path of destruction gives way to an altogether different set of problems, the family’s deep-rooted issues and dysfunction are amplified within the confines of their cramped “safe space” and things turn nasty very quickly. Sean King O’Grady’s feature debut is a gleefully twisted piece of work, laced with flashes of pitch-black humour and an unpredictable dark heart that will leave you reeling.
