THE ADVENT CALENDAR
Director: Patrick Ridremont | France/Belgium | 2021 | 104 mins
Eva is an ex-dancer whose career was abruptly cut short when she was in a serious car accident, leaving her unable to walk and reliant on a wheelchair. When her friend Sophie gives her an antique wooden advent calendar procured from a Munich Christmas Market, Eva is initially dismissive but eventually intrigued by the mysterious object and its unusual backstory. Each of the calendar’s compartments contains a sweet and, if the story is to be believed, Eva must eat them all to avoid the vengeful wrath of Ich, the mysterious demonic creature that is attached to the object’s lore. As the days pass, Eva begins to realise that the advent calendar holds the power to bring good fortune for her, whilst simultaneously spelling an unpleasant outcome for others. It soon becomes clear that this strange antique could fulfil her heart’s desires and deliver sweet revenge… but at a price.
With a spirit as mean as Krampus himself, The Advent Calendar is here to bring treats and tricks ahead of the festive season. Proving the old adage yet again that you should always be careful what you wish for, this twisted tale of yuletide terror is a stylish and devilishly wicked addition to the Christmas horror film canon.
