Director: Phil Tippett | USA | 2021 | 83 mins | English Premiere
Amongst the desolate ruins of a city, a corroded diving bell descends carrying a mysterious figure known as The Assassin. After travelling through countless levels of this nightmarish world, the nameless figure emerges from his transport with a map in hand and an indecipherable mission ahead of him: to explore a labyrinth of bizarre landscapes, a forbidding world of tortured souls, decrepit bunkers, and wretched monstrosities forged from the most primordial horrors of the subconscious mind. While the precise nature of his mission is unclear, The Assassin’s literal descent into hell takes us on a horrifying journey into a Dantean world of mad scientists, grotesque monstrosities and untold horrors.
Thirty years in the making, this visually stunning and beautifully crafted film comes from the mind of Phil Tippett, director and special effects maestro whose work has graced some of cinema’s best loved films and who has been at the forefront of every major development in the history of cinematic visual effects. With the advent of computer technology, the craft of stop-motion animation was considered by some to be a relic destined to be forgotten and the film was shelved. After two decades, Phil Tippett returned to the project and eventually completed his vision in 2020. Every set, creature, and effigy in this macabre masterpiece is hand-crafted and painstakingly animated using traditional stop-motion techniques. MAD GOD is a labour of love, a testament to the power of creative grit, and an homage to the timeless art of stop-motion animation.
